At this point, you should have a prioritized list of energy performance improvement opportunities, as well as at least one objective and target identified. In this step, you will select the opportunities that are most appropriate for implementation.

Advancing from Foundational Level 1 to ISO 50001 Level 2 for Step 2.10

You have identified and prioritized energy opportunities for foundational energy management (Level 1) and identified considerations for selecting opportunities for implementation. One of the chief considerations for implementation is to determine if the opportunity will help achieve the energy objectives and targets your organization has identified. Other considerations can include funding availability, personnel time, and expertise and other resource requirements. For ISO 50001 (Level 2) the considerations will be similar, but you must also take into account how the opportunity will affect other organizational priorities and whether it will contribute to improvement of your organization’s energy performance.

When selecting an opportunity, take into consideration the following factors:

Energy objective(s) and target(s) determined in Step 2.9
Organizational constraints, such as:
1. Funding: Is funding available?
2. Disruption to organization: Does implementation require any major disruption to your organization? Does it necessitate downtime of certain critical equipment?
3. Availability of labor and expertise: Are the right staff available to help implement this opportunity? Are there any consultants available to help implement?
4. Available resources: Are any other critical resources available?
