Step 5.3 Take action to continually improve

It’s important to take action following the management review meeting to continually improve your organization’s energy performance. The results of the management review meeting set the strategic direction for determining and prioritizing new energy performance improvement opportunities for your organization to pursue.

Advancing from Foundational Level 1 to ISO 50001 Level 2 for Step 5.3

Both foundational energy management (Level 1) and ISO 50001 (Level 2) recognize the importance of follow-through on management review decisions and actions.

For ISO 50001, continual EnMS and energy performance improvement relies on an energy management system that remains relevant and adds value to your organization. This is accomplished by ensuring that the data and information is kept up to date, periodic reviews are conducted, and the processes of the EnMS are modified as needed to stay current and appropriate for your organization. Over time, these actions embed energy management into daily activities and promote positive cultural change.

How to do it

There is one associated task you will need to complete:

5.3.1 Execute management review action items

Any new action items that follow from the management review meeting should be followed up on to ensure they are being addressed. Follow-up includes determining who is responsible for the actions, when the actions are to be completed, and how follow up is performed to ensure completion and effectiveness of those actions. The results of the management review could also provide important information that can help with identifying and prioritizing new energy performance improvement opportunities (Step 2.6). Sustaining already implemented energy performance improvement opportunities is also part of the continual improvement process, as is avoiding repeating failures by identifying activities that did not have the expected positive results.
