Step 4.4 Plan and conduct internal audits

Transition to SEP

ISO 50001 requires your organization to develop an internal audit program to ensure your energy management system (EnMS) is effectively implemented and maintained and improves energy performance. ANSI/MSE 50021 specifies additional requirements related to the energy performance claim and any Scorecard credits your organizations may be claiming. See How to do it.

How to do it

Tasks associated with meeting the SEP requirements for developing and implementing internal audits include:

4.4.8 Conduct an internal audit to determine the energy performance claim

The energy performance claim to be included in the SEP application must be audited prior to a certification or recertification audit. Ensure this audit is conducted in accordance with the SEP Measurement & Verification Protocol. This task relates to and builds upon task 4.4.5 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

4.4.9 Conduct an internal audit to audit the scorecard credits claimed

If your organization is using the SEP Scorecard you need to conduct an internal audit of both the management system and technical credits claimed. Ensure this audit is conducted to verify the credits are in place and being achieved. This task relates to and builds upon task 4.4.5 in Level 2 ISO 50001 Energy Management.

Information on SEP requirements for planning and conducting an internal audit is found in ANSI/MSE 50021:

ANSI/MSE 50021

  • Section 4.6.3 requires that your organization conduct an internal audit using the SEP Measurement & Verification Protocol (M&V Protocol) to determine the energy performance claim you will include in your certification or recertification application. The SEnPI, which is a key characteristic for determining energy performance in the SEP program (see Step 4.1), must be audited.
  • Section 4.6.3 also requires your organization to audit the energy management credits you are claiming if you are seeking SEP Scorecard credits. Internal auditors must look for evidence that these credits are in place and being achieved. Internal auditors will have to audit both management system credits as well as technical credits associated with any Innovation Credits (IC).

There are no additional requirements related to the SEP M&V Protocol.
