Step 2.5 Determine significant energy uses

Transition to SEP

Identification of significant energy use (SEU) is a key component of your ISO 50001 energy review. There are no additional ANSI/MSE 50021 or SEP Measurement & Verification Protocol (M&V Protocol) requirements but there are SEP scorecard credits related to SEU identification.

How to do it

There are no additional requirements related to establishing your significant energy uses but there are scorecard credits available.

ANSI/MSE 50021

There are no additional SEP requirements related to ANSI/MSE 50021.

SEP Measurement & Verification Protocol (M&V Protocol)

There are no additional requirements related to the SEP M&V Protocol.

SEP Scorecard Credits for the Mature Pathway

Organizations seeking certification under the Mature Pathway have an opportunity to acquire SEP Scorecard credits related to identifying significant energy uses. The credits related to identifying the significant energy uses are listed below.

Related SEP Scorecard Credits

Significant Energy Uses (SU) Credit 1-Organization energy balance (2 possible points)
Significant Energy Uses (SU) Credit 2-Designation of significant energy use (2-8 possible points)

SU Credit 1 Your organization can earn points for this credit by developing a documented energy balance detailing the energy consumption of the systems, equipment and SEUs that, when combined, account for at least 90% of your organization’s total energy consumption. You must show evidence that the energy balance is updated and maintained as a part of the energy planning process.

SU Credit 2 Points for this credit are earned by determining the total energy consumption of significant energy uses and then comparing the total SEU consumption with your organization’s total energy consumption. Points are awarded based on the % of total consumption identified as a significant energy use.

Points per Percentage of Total Consumption Identified as a Significant Energy Use

Points per Percentage of Total Consumption Identified as a Significant Energy Use
≥50% & < 60%2 points
≥60% & <70%4 points
≥70% & <80%6 points
≥80%8 points

The equipment, systems or processes designated as significant energy uses must be managed as defined in ISO 50001. If your organization has not designated significant energy uses that account for at least 50% of the total energy consumption, this credit is not available.
