Step 2.6 Identify and prioritize energy opportunities
Transition to SEP
The implementation of the energy review process in Section 4.4.3c of ISO 50001 requires the identification and prioritization of energy opportunities. There are no additional ANSI/MSE 50021 or SEP Measurement & Verification Protocol (M&V Protocol) requirements but there are SEP scorecard credits related to energy opportunities.
There are no additional requirements related to operational controls but there are scorecard credits available.
ANSI/MSE 50021
There are no additional requirements related to ANSI/MSE 50021.
SEP M&V Protocol
There are no additional requirements related to the SEP M&V Protocol.
SEP Scorecard Credits for the Mature Pathway
Organizations seeking certification under the Mature Pathway have an opportunity to acquire SEP Scorecard credits through additional activities related to energy opportunities. The credits related to energy opportunities are listed below.
Related SEP Scorecard Credits
Energy Supply (ES) Credit 1.2-Demand optimization (3 possible points)
Energy Performance Improvement Opportunities (EP) Credit 1.1-Regular assessment of SEUs (2 possible points)
Energy Performance Improvement Opportunities (EP) Credit 1.2-Energy system assessment standards (2 possible points)
Energy Performance Improvement Opportunities (EP) Credit 1.3-Continual improvement tools (2 possible points)
Energy Performance Improvement Opportunities (EP) Credit 1.4-Life cycle costing (2 possible points)
Energy Performance Improvement Opportunities (EP) Credit 2-Lower financial barriers (4 possible points)
ES Credit 1.2 To earn the points for this credit your organization will be required to demonstrate how it has optimized demand or peak energy consumption. Examples include seasonal work schedules or investments in load shifting technologies. Your organization must demonstrate how these activities have resulted in at least a 10% annual cost avoidance of utility demand over the three-year period prior to SEP certification.
EP Credit 1.1 This credit requires that energy assessment(s) are conducted on the designated significant energy use(s) at least once during the three years prior to certification or re-certification. You can use internal or external experts to conduct an energy assessment.
The following evidence is required to determine if your organization satisfies the requirements of this credit:
Evidence that an energy assessment has been completed on each of the significant energy use during the three years prior to certification or re-certification.
You will be required to show records related to this credit during the achievement period and reporting period, including the energy assessment report(s).
EP Credit 1.2 Your organization earns points for this credit if you use nationally recognized energy system assessment standards and personnel certified to apply the respective standard. At least one of the energy assessments of a significant energy use must conform to a nationally recognized energy system assessment standard and it must be conducted by a professional certified for the assessment standard. The assessment must have been conducted within three years prior to certification or recertification.
EP Credit 1.3 Your organization earns points for this credit if you include energy use and consumption as potential improvement factors within your continual improvement activities and tools that you typically use for productivity improvements. You must show records related to this credit for both the reporting period and surveillance periods. Additional data during the achievement period will be accepted but is not required. Activities defined as energy assessments do not meet the intent of this credit.
EP Credit 1.4 Your organization can receive points for this credit by utilizing life cycle costing (LCC) analysis as part of the criteria for evaluating and prioritizing your energy performance improvement opportunities. LCC analysis is only required for energy performance improvement opportunities with a simple payback greater than two years.
EP Credit 2 Points for this credit can be earned if your organization establishes a separate pool of capital for energy performance improvement opportunities and utilizes a financial hurdle rate at least the same or less stringent than hurdle rates for other capital projects.
